Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. Since she was the only child She was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. The dream, however was in vain when she left school after three years of studying and becoming a teachers' aide. Following her first gigs performing at live poetry performances, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. During an Roots concert, she made her debut to be an artist. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She became the first signed artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
